Today was a double header of bad news for the MTA – the Governor wants to blow it up, and the Mayor doesn’t want to fund it. Riders just want to get where they’re going. Fast Forward will get them there, and congestion pricing is the first step to paying for it. Another step is moving buses faster, and signal prioritization will help make that happen. These issues were both raised today, yet were essentially lost in the fight over who controls the MTA and who should fund it. Finger pointing and harsh rhetoric won’t solve the myriad problems facing the transit system, but collaboration and compromise will. It’s time to dial it back and work together for real solutions – to passing congestion pricing, finding savings and efficiencies, and bringing in a strong and independent chair who can lead the MTA in the right direction.
