LIRRCC Press Statement – June 29, 2017 – Calls for Federal Financial Assistance for Penn Station

LIRRCC Calls for Federal Financial Assistance to Defray LIRR Costs during Amtrak Penn Station Repairs

The Long Island Rail Road Commuter Council (LIRRCC) is calling for the federal government to
provide financial assistance to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to help defray costs associated with Amtrak’s repairs to Penn Station between July 10 and September 1, 2017. “It is imperative that any financial losses incurred by the MTA due to Amtrak’s deferred maintenance not be borne on the backs of Long Island Rail Road riders” said LIRRCC Chair Mark Epstein. “The LIRRCC is calling on the US Department of Transportation to cover all MTA losses resulting from this summer’s Amtrak repair work.”

A letter from the LIRRCC to U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao is attached.
